Legionella
Present in all natural aquatic environments, such as rivers, lakes and spring waters, from which it ascends through water pipes into man-made settings, such as baths, reservoirs, swimming pools, etc., Legionella is one of the most prevalent pathogens and poses a health hazard. Legionella has its maximum development in the presence of suitable conditions such as temperature, aerobic environments, stagnant conditions, presence of biofilms and/or amoebas.
Humans contract the infection through aerosols, Legionella causes between 5% and 10% of total cases of community pneumonia and between 3% and 20% of all hospital pneumonias, and causes a few hundred cases each year in Italy, which are lethal between 5% and 15%.
